Citizens of Washington DC Refuse to be Complicit in Genocide (Freedom Fridays Protest, 8-8-25)

Actions for Gaza have been popping up all over the Washington DC area in the last few months.

The Palestinian Youth Movement most consistently host the largest rallies in the DMV area, though recently some other groups have been gaining traction with their weekly or daily protests.

I went to the Freedom Fridays protest by Youth Demand DC last Friday, August 8th. In a nutshell, Youth Demand hosts a community space every Friday at 6pm in DuPont Circle, where participants are encouraged to share their thoughts and feelings about the Gaza genocide. Afterwards, they march through DuPont Circle up to Adams Morgan, encouraging others to join them. To find out more about Freedom Fridays, here is a previous article I wrote about them.

At DuPont Circle, we attracted a small crowd by banging pots and pans, demanding an end to the starvation and genocide of Gaza. Afterwards, we held a short vigil for the filmmaker and activist Awdah Hathaleen, who was recently murdered by an Israeli settler. Despite filming his own murder, the perpetrator was set free by the courts.

Then, we began our march through DuPont Circle and up to Adams Morgan. Along the way, dozens of bystanders cheered us on, and two even joined to march with us.

To me, this shows that support for Palestine is out there—it’s up to us to reach those who may be anti-genocide but are perhaps too frightened to organize. Our coalition must number in the millions, even billions, if we are to genuinely challenge the powers responsible for the war crimes in Gaza.
