Founder of the Amazon Labor Union and former crewmember of the Handala flotilla Chris Smalls hosted a rally outside AFL-CIO’s headquarters in Washington DC last Friday. He demands that organized labor must stop capitulating to Israel and cease weapons manufacturing and shipment immediately.
I attended the rally and found it to be small, but filled with passionate people. Green Party presidential candidate and advocate for Palestine Jill Stein spoke as well as her vice presidential pick, Butch Ware. Ware brought up Malcolm X’s visit to Gaza, where Malcolm connected the Black struggle for liberation in the United States to the struggle of the Palestinians against Zionism. Malcolm X said “the problem that exists in Palestine is not a religious problem… it is a question of colonialism. It is a question of a people who are being deprived of their homeland.”
But Chris Smalls’s fiery speech about labor’s complicity stole the show. His ability to drum up the crowd and channel his rage through his words is a power seldom have. Watch a snippet of Smalls’s speech below.
