Protest Highlight – Freedom Fridays (Every Friday, 6pm at Dupont Circle)

Every Friday, local Washington DC organization Youth Demand DC, has a march at 6pm at Dupont Circle for Palestine.

Youth Demand has been doing this protest consistently for two months. This is a great idea, as right now, Israel is using a forced famine to starve Palestinians. Regular protests like these spread awareness of the Gaza genocide in a way people cannot ignore.

I spoke to two of the organizers, Sam and Alex. They said that this idea came out of a desire to have a consistent space with a low barrier of entry to gather as a community and march around Dupont This is a way of reclaiming public spaces. They mentioned that it’s important to have a place for anyone, regardless of their level of experience in activism, to have discussions and organize. There is no hierarchy in this space, everyone comes with their own talents and skills to the group. It is also a place for experimentation, of brainstorming and implementing different organizational strategies.

I was glad to hear that when they would go to restaurants and bars, some customers would actually leave with them and join the march. This shows how even in the center of empire, there is still immense support for the people of Gaza, for stopping this genocide. It is up to us to reach people willing to speak up.
