Under the guise of “fighting antisemitism,” the Trump administration has charged George Washington University with violating Title VI and discriminating against Jewish and Israeli students. The university has until August 22nd to either capitulate, which would risk students’ rights or to fight the Trump administration in court. George Washington’s Left Coalition, which includes GWU’s Students for Justice in Palestine, Jewish Voice for Peace, and Socialist Action Initiative, has written an op-ed in Mondoweiss and put out statements on Instagram demanding that the university not submit to these obvious attacks against freedom of speech, international students, and pro-Palestine activism.
I applaud these GW students not only for putting out this strong statement against state terror, but also for building this left coalition, which gives them much more power than could be concentrated in any one club. This, alongside GW’s Students for Justice in Palestine chapter disaffiliating with the university shows that despite intense repression not only from the university administration but from the national government as well, the student movement for Palestine at GW and other college campuses is stronger and more steadfast than ever.
