The Betrayal of Palestine: Mahmoud Abbas and the End of the PLO’s Legitimacy

Decades ago, the Palestine Liberation Organization and its largest member, Fatah, were once seen as beacons of hope for the cause of liberating Palestine. Now, the PLO and its president Mahmoud Abbas have completely lost legitimacy in the eyes of Palestinians.

Abbas’s PLO, which on paper governs parts of the West Bank through the Palestinian Authority, is nothing more than a puppet government for Israel. Their tactic of appealing Israel at every opportunity is not only naïve but criminal, especially now that the people of Gaza are being systematically killed by Israel in this genocide.

More recently, Abbas has called for Hamas, the democratically elected governing party in Gaza, to disarm, calling them “sons of dogs.” He wants his failing Fatah to gain total control of Gaza and the West Bank, despite an overwhelming majority of Palestinians having little to no faith in his government, and 81 percent of Palestinians wanting him to resign as of of May 2025.

What does Mahmoud Abbas hope to accomplish? This fantasy of a two state solution, where the Palestinian state is ruled by a deeply unpopular and debilitated Fatah, is completely unrealistic. If Hamas surrenders and Gaza is given to Israel, what incentive does Israel have to give Gaza to Fatah?
